Our Church History
Prior to the year Negro slaves were freed, 1865, many negroes living in the vicinity of Roebuck (Becker) South Carolina, belonged to Bethlehem Baptist Church. Since they had no church of their own, their slave masters allowed them to be members of Bethlehem Baptist. Captain Moses Foster, Abner Foster, Ransom Foster, Jim Steadman along, with others thought it would be good to give the negro slaves, of Bethlehem Baptist Church an acre of land, on the corner of the old graveyard, facing Old Blackstock Road, the present location of Foster Chapel Baptist Church so that they could worship and praise as God led them.
Immediately, that day, the men came together with their axes and built a log church, covering it with brush. Generating light with bottles, stuffed with paper wicks, and filled with kerosene, the negroes worshipped in their new church that very night. Their singing, shouting and praising God, rang out all over Roebuck. The church establised the name, Foster Chapel Brush Arbor, naming it for the giver of the land, Captain Moses Foster.
